LEADERS’ NET – MAY 2009
MISSION AND COMMUNITY May 12th 2009
Andrew Roberts - Fresh Expressions Team
Zion Christian Centre
What is the session about? In this session the team will help us to take a fresh look at the communities we serve and ask ourselves is who we are relevant to the people we are attempting to reach. In this session we will look at three models of mission and there effectiveness.
Attractional – This is asking people to come and join the activities you already have in place. Alpha etc.
Engaging – Activities that touch a community, works of service etc. This remains a come and visit us model.
Emerging – This is starting in the community and staying the community. Planting
something new that people can connect to.
This is the main area of mission that we will be looking at on this day.
Who is Andrew Roberts? Andrew worked for Ford Motor Company as a financial analyst before entering training for the Methodist ministry in 1988. He served in the Doncaster and Stourbridge and Brierley Hill Circuits before working as a Director of the Saltmine Trust. Andrew developed two fresh expressions of Church personally. A Church plant in a community centre in Doncaster and the Funky Fish Club for children in Stourbridge. He leads the National training Team at Fresh expressions.

A BIBLE LECTURE WITH A DIFFERENCE!
The Sacred art of Misreading the Bible’ Chris Meredith
7.30pm 24th April 2009 Amblecote Methodist Church (on the A461 opposite Lidl)
This lecture asks some questions about how we read the bible. What does it mean to read? How stable is meaning? Where is it 'located'? In the text? In the author? What does 'meaning' mean? What implications do these questions have for readers of the Bible? This lecture will try and navigate some of these questions, respond to the issues that are raised, probably provoke some problems in our neat, tidy perceptions about the bible, and offer some radical solutions to being a bible reader in a post modern age; to being a community with The Book, in a post modern age.
Who is Chris Meredith? Chris has a first class Master's in Biblical Studies and is currently researching a PhD thesis on Hebrew Narrative/Poetry at the University of Sheffield, where he occasionally teaches. He is also currently working on several Journal articles for scholarly publication, covering: the use of space and conversation in I Samuel; the unravelling effect that Jotham's parable has for Judges 9; and a look at whether or not the author of Jonah was a good sailor. His research interests are generally literary, though they also encompass feminist theory, theoretical geography, Hebrew linguistics and postmodern discourse. He is also interested in the place of the Bible in a 21st Century Church."

Hi Guys,
Hope your all ok?

KIDS STUFF
DOUG HORLEY VISIT TO WOLVERHAMPTON - JULY 18TH
Calling all those with a passion for children's ministry!
A bunch of children's workers met for a coffee in Starbucks Wolverhampton and out of it came a hunger and a vision to resource children's workers, whether paid or voluntary, across Wolverhampton as well as provide an event that is relevant and exciting for children! By working together we can learn from each other as well as resource each other.
So far the churches involved are St Jude's, St Phil's, St Jo's and St Bart's but we would love others to be involved, whatever denomination, whether you have 5 children or 50 we would like to hear from you!
Planning is very much in its early stages. We have booked Doug Horley to come and lead the main children's event in the early evening as well as run an afternoon training session for children's workers/leaders/helpers on Kids' Worship. The date is the 18th July and the venue is yet to be confirmed. It promises to be an action packed day where as part of the main event the kids will also have a chance to do workshops such as breakdancing, puppets, circus skills or chill out in a quiet corner. There's something for everybody.
If you would like to know more or be part of the planning we are meeting together on the 17th March, 8-9:30pm at St Joseph's C of E Church, Coalway Road, Merry Hill. Or if you have any further questions please contact Jo Godfrey, on 01902 752542 or email Liz Pemberton on liz@saintjosephs.co.ukPlease RSVP if possible if you'd like to come to the planning meeting.
We hope that you will join with us as we seek to grow together. Our long term aim is to see the Wulfrun Hall full of children praising God with children and families from across Wolverhampton , One body, many parts!

Living Springs news We were wondering if through your contacts in The Net you may know of someone who may like to purchase a Jack Leg Portacabin (32ft by 10ft). Clean and carpeted inside, recently had the roof repaired so it is watertight, heat and light, windows all around and door.We have used it for a classroom and a contact room during the past four years but now we can longer have planning permission (because we’re in the greenbelt) and we need to move it on asap..We would like to be able to use funds from its sale to launch a mini farm project for the community (potentially excluded children)If you could pass this around, we would be most grateful and ask them to get in touch with Julie on 01384 872817.We are looking for £1100 plus the cost of removal (transport and crane within a 150 mile radius)) £550. Total £1650.Many ThanksJulie

Shine your light in the Black Country 2009
Following in the footsteps of the highly successful out-reach in Cardiff last year, OAC Ministries and OM Lifehope are again uniting in a joint initiative in the Heart of the UK. We are looking to draw together a team of up to 100 led by experienced evangelists and working with about 10 churches in ’The Black Country’ area of the West Midlands for what promises to be an exciting time of outreach ministry. Every morning the teams will unite for prayer and training before heading out to their respective churches to engage with local communities.
Dave Glover, National Director for OAC says, “ What excites me most about this venture, apart from the fact that 2 highly respected organisations like OAC & OM are coming together in this way, is the fact that we are engaging with local churches on their own patches. Nothing is being imposed and we are there to serve, at minimal financial cost, in assisting local believers make an im-pact where they live. It also gives Chris-tians the opportunity to work alongside experienced evangelists and learn invaluable communi-cation skills that will serve them well in years to come.”
The dates of the outreach are Saturday 4th July – Sun-day 12th July and already quite a multi-national team is coming together.
Cost for the week is £125 which includes all meals and accommodation! Daily rate £5 (bring your own food)!
Motivation!
Every revival in history has flowed from the public preach-ing of Jesus and His message. The greatest influence on the Protestant Church in 300 years has been the Revivalist Preachers. (Historian K s Latourette) Let’s get on with it!
Training!
‘Shine your light in the Black Country’ provides the ideal opportunity to learn new skills and to put them into prac-tice. Each morning training will be given in basic evangel-ism. Learn how to share your faith, give a testimony or preach with a sketchboard. Be enriched by the experience of preaching evangelists from around the country.
Team ministry!
Everyone will be part of a small team under the direction of an experienced evangelist. Together they will work with local churches in the Black Country. Already there is ex-citement as churches pray and plan for all that is to come. We are better together!
Outreach!
“Wisdom is calling out in the streets and market places, calling loudly at the city gates, and wherever people come together” (GNB Proverbs 1:20)
The clear distinctive of OAC and of OM has always been one of reaching people where they are with the Good News of Jesus Christ. That is the thrust of ‘Shine your light in the Black Country’! Our prayer is that you will want be part of it!

A Medical Emergency. Webuye. W/Kenya. 31 March 2009
Evelyn Mudenyo is 30 yrs and very sick with a heart condition called Mitral Valve Stenosis.
2 Months it was confirmed the Mitral Valve in her heart would need to be replaced if she is to live..

Gideon 31yrs and Evelyn are part of the full time team of the church we relate to in Webuye W/Kenya.
Evelyn has pioneered the micro financing and development of numerous projects that has helped many
widows and women to gain new skills and start earning through new business.
The specialist nature of this valve replacement needs her to be in experienced hands. Apart from that, the
cost in Nairobi was over $50,000.
Our 40 year history with India has given us some of the best specialized medical contacts in the world.
We are planning to send her immediately to Bombay for examination and surgery.
It will cost £7,000 from start to finish.
We have asked them to raise the money through their extended family and church for the cost of
passports; visas and return air fare Nairobi/Bombay return. They are selling things to do this.
(There is a famine at the moment in west Kenya so things are unusually hard anyway)
there is no way that they can find the money for the surgery. We need help to raise it.
This is a genuine emergency. The Dr’s are amazed that she has had children and lived!
They are trusting in the power and life of Jesus to heal in what-ever way. They are a faithful couple.
Walsall Community Church Trust; will administrate the
money and pledges raised.
Please make cheques out to; Walsall Community Church. Thank you for Taking time on this

Wolves NET news Warmest greetings in the wonderful name of Jesus! I trust your Easter time has been blessed and fruitful. What a wonderful time we enjoyed on Saturday with our Easter March of Hope and special Open Air Service at St Peter’s Square. Again we attracted a large number of believers who wanted to get out and tell the world that Jesus is alive! Thank you to everyone who helped to make it possible.

Part of the crowd at St Peter’s Square Easter Saturday
A number of us have already commented how appropriate the Bishop of Wolverhampton’s words were that ‘opportunities to express our faith in public are getting fewer and fewer’. The Easter march and public service is one such opportunity we should cherish and value. The fact is we already have to wade through masses of red tape, bureaucracy and financial barriers to make the event happen. Barry Law beavers away at this with various council departments and authorities all year!
Our secular society is determined to confine faith to a private world. We must resist this and protect the public arena at all cost.
It would be great if we could ‘do it again’ next year! The steering group would appreciate your feedback and suggestions.
Now on to other things: There are several matters of news to share concerning up-coming events:
First, a final reminder that our next ministers’ prayer lunch is being held Tuesday 21st April, 12.30pm at Holy Trinity Church, Bushbury Road, Heath Town. We look forward to another wonderful time together and hope to see you there.
Our next ‘Healing for You’ outreach is Friday 29th May, 7.30pm at St John’s Church in the Square, Wolverhampton. It begins at 7.30pm and we look forward again to the ministry of Jonathan Conrathe with us. Each time we have seen people coming to Christ and healing testimonies. Yet these meetings are about more than what happens on the night. God is opening the healing wells in the city. There is a rising tide of the power of God at work and his people are finding confidence and faith to minister Christ to the needy just as the early church did. Please publicize this event.
Finally, on behalf of the steering group I want to thank every church and individual who has contributed financially over recent months. We have been able to do some amazing things together and it has all been worth it! However I need to share that recent events particularly the Easter March, have depleted our funds quite considerably. Would you please consider sending a special donation or even better a regular standing order? It would make a dramatic difference. We need around £1,100 to meet our immediate commitments.
I appreciate Dave Vestergaard has recently been in touch on this matter – I just wanted to add this extra appeal.
The Christian Life Centre, Sedgley Street is kindly handling the finances for us and the account details are as follows:
Bank: HSBC, PO Box 33, Wolverhampton, WV1 1 TE
Bank Sort code: 40-47-11
Account Name: The Apostolic Church (Wolverhampton NET)
Account Number: 12576546
Many thanks in advance for considering this request.
May your life, family and ministry be blessed beyond measure as 2009 unfolds.
Sincerely in Christ
