1611 and all that…….?
It is right that we should celebrate the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible. Many of us “oldies” were raised on it and we give God thanks for the way its influence has spread worldwide. Yet our rejoicing should be muted as we realised that even after two thousand years of Christian activity there are many millions of people who have never seen a Bible in their own language.
The best way of celebrating this anniversary is to support in a greater way those agencies which are trying to reach such people. Bible Society (tel:01793-418222) tells us that 60 pence will provide enough paper for a whole Bible to be printed in China. Wycliffe Bible Translators (tel: 01494-582286) will welcome any offer of support, as will the Bible Network.
Even the impoverished among us can help. Why not collect all the surplus Bibles we have in our homes and send them to Book Aid? (Tel:0208 778-2247). Let’s end Bible Poverty!
