New Mayor of Dudley champions volunteers
An extra special first engagement awaited new Mayor of Dudley Cllr Michael Evans at a Halesowen charity this morning (Friday 20th May)
Black Country Foodbank helped to name the incoming Mayor ‘Volunteering Champion for Dudley borough’ at an annual volunteering celebration. The charity was invited by Dudley CVS Volunteer Centre to host the event, which also saw former Mayor Cllr Peter Miller thanked for spending his year in office championing good causes.
Special guests including senior police, council and health officials got to hear how Black Country Foodbank has helped more than 5000 local people in the last year alone.
The charity is completely staffed by volunteers and helps local people in crisis through a network of 8 distribution centres. Each centre provides three day emergency supplies to vulnerable people across Dudley borough and also in Walsall.
The celebration saw the Mayor Cllr Evans personally thanking volunteers with Valued Volunteer Award certificates and rounded off with a cheque presentation to the charity for £500 from the Dudley Safe and Sound Partnership.
Andy Gray, Dudley CVS Chief Officer said, “We are delighted to team up with Black Country Foodbank to welcome our fourth Volunteering Champion for the borough. Cllr Miller has been a wholehearted advocate during his year in office and we look forward to our new champion Mayor Cllr Evans being an equally high profile champion in the year to come!”
